The vision for Harmony Garden was to create a peaceful, subtropical retreat centred around a circular lawn. The client approached us with a clear concept in mind, and from the outset, the project was a true collaboration. We spent considerable time working alongside the client, refining their original ideas and developing a design that balanced structure with organic flow.
One of the most rewarding aspects of this project was the flexibility built into the process. Rather than following a rigid plan, we adopted a fluid, responsive approach that allowed for ongoing creativity. This gave us the freedom to make design decisions in real time, adjusting elements as the garden evolved. It became a living, breathing project, shaped by collaboration, vision, and the natural beauty of the subtropical palette.
This garden was designed as a dual-purpose sanctuary. The client approached us with a vision to transform their outdoor space into a lush, subtropical retreat that offered both tranquillity and vibrancy. They were already fans of the subtropical aesthetic we specialise in and gave us the creative freedom to bring that to life in a bold and expressive way.
Our design focused heavily on creating a strong connection between indoor and outdoor living. By using natural stone pavers and rich, layered subtropical planting, we crafted a garden that could be enjoyed equally from within the space and from the comfort of the home. The lush foliage offers ever-changing textures and colours, bringing movement and life to every corner.
The brief for this project was clear and inspiring: “Create a subtropical paradise where I can enjoy long summer evenings, but that also remains lush and vibrant through the winter months with pops of colour.”
The space we had to work with was essentially a blank canvas, offering the perfect opportunity to explore creative ideas and make bold design decisions. From the outset, we were intentional about avoiding a traditional layout of garden beds that simply hug the boundaries. Instead, we designed the planting beds to extend toward the house, giving the garden a sense of depth and fullness.
The client wanted to create a low-maintenance, private garden with simple yet elegant planting that would lend a more formal aesthetic. While this design approach was different from our usual style, we were eager to take on the challenge and craft a space that met their unique vision.
To achieve a low-maintenance solution, we opted for high-quality artificial grass, which has seen significant advancements in both durability and visual appeal. This allowed us to create a pristine, green lawn without the upkeep required by natural turf. Ensuring proper drainage was essential to prevent water buildup beneath the artificial grass, a step we carefully addressed during the preparation phase to avoid any issues down the line.
Here, the goal was to create a low-maintenance garden that also featured a unique focal point of interest. While this approach differed from our usual heavily planted designs, we embraced the challenge and set out to craft something simple, functional, and visually appealing.
Given the small size of the garden, our first decision was to deck the entire space, maximising the usable area. This not only provided a clean, open look but also created a versatile foundation for the features a spa and an outdoor shower. The spa’s location was somewhat fixed due to spatial constraints, but we had room to be more creative with the placement and design of the shower.
We were brought in to bring to life a design created by another designer that the client had commissioned. It was an exciting opportunity to showcase our craftsmanship across various elements of the garden, with the deck being the standout feature.
We began by stripping the entire site back to bare soil. This allowed us to set out the design with precision, creating a solid foundation for the project and making sure that everything was built to the highest standard.
One of the main challenges was creating a flow between the interior of the home and the garden. To achieve this, we built the deck to the same level as the indoor flooring, ensuring a cohesive transition from inside to out. We selected premium Vitex decking and used high-quality stainless steel fixings and lighting to elevate the deck’s aesthetic and functionality.
For this, a busy professional running a large business, approached us to create a tranquil space where they could unwind after long days of work. Given the expansive rural property and the many gardens we had already installed, we had an established planting palette to work with.
As we had previously incorporated Corten steel throughout the property, it felt natural to continue this aesthetic in the spa area. We installed a variety of large, bottomless planters in different sizes and placements, adding interest and texture to the space while maintaining a cohesive look with the surrounding gardens.
The client’s goal was to create a resort-style garden inspired by their travels to the United States, but with a uniquely New Zealand feel. Their priority was to incorporate native planting wherever possible, ensuring the space still felt rooted in its local landscape.
We began the design process collaboratively, working closely with the client over the course of a year to develop a plan that met both their aesthetic goals and practical needs. The home itself, a character-filled older property with a history of various renovations and alterations, presented its own set of challenges during construction.
However, the client remained open and flexible, which allowed the design to evolve organically. In many ways, the garden began to shape itself as we responded to the quirks of the site in real time.
We take great pride in delivering exceptional service and creating memorable experiences for each and every one of our clients.

The final result is a richly layered garden that offers a strong sense of place and tranquillity. Lush planting beds bring texture and movement, while the circular artificial lawn provides a soft, open focal point. Natural stone pavers guide the journey through the garden, leading to a compact deck and spa area designed for relaxation. Corten steel garden rings add a sculptural element and subtly direct the flow of movement through the space, creating a sense of cohesion and rhythm.
To ensure the garden remains vibrant and low-maintenance, we integrated a full irrigation system and strategically placed outdoor lighting, which highlights key features and extends the garden’s usability into the evening hours. Every detail was considered to create a space that feels harmonious, personal, and deeply connected to its surroundings.
The client was thrilled with the outcome, and we’re equally proud of what we created together — a true subtropical paradise that reflects both thoughtful design and the joy of creative collaboration.

To provide privacy and a sense of enclosure, we incorporated a variety of tall palms and structured plantings that softened the boundaries of the space while screening it from neighbouring properties.
This created a peaceful, secluded atmosphere — a hidden oasis tucked away from the bustle of the outside world.
A key feature of the project was the repositioning of the client’s existing plunge pool. Originally located in a less accessible part of the yard, the pool was relocated adjacent to a newly constructed rear patio, making it more convenient to use and better integrated into the overall flow of the garden. This patio now serves as a practical and inviting threshold between the home and the garden, encouraging frequent use of both the outdoor living space and the pool.
The plant palette was carefully curated to include a mix of vibrant, subtropical species with bold foliage and seasonal colour. We were fortunate to work with some existing plantings as well — in particular, the client’s striking Dracaena draco specimens, which added dramatic form and presence to the design. These mature trees now serve as natural focal points, anchoring the garden with their sculptural silhouettes.
Today, the garden has matured into a stunning, immersive environment that feels both luxurious and laid-back. Whether hosting a lively gathering or enjoying a quiet evening surrounded by palms and greenery, the space offers a true sense of escape. It’s a garden that transports you — somewhere tropical, timeless, and beautifully alive.

To guide movement through the garden and encourage exploration, we introduced soft lawn pathways that flow from the front of the property to the rear. These paths naturally lead visitors through the garden, past rich beds of subtropical planting — some of which were handpicked by the client, adding a personal touch to the palette. The selection of plants was carefully curated to ensure year-round interest, with bold foliage, varied textures, and seasonal blooms offering a constant sense of life and energy.
The end result is a lush, inviting garden that fully delivers on the brief. It’s a space designed not only for summer relaxation but for year-round enjoyment — with vibrant plantings that hold their presence through every season.
Today, the garden has become a true extension of the home. The client now spends more time outdoors than inside, fully embracing the restorative power of being surrounded by nature. And for us, that’s the ultimate success: creating spaces that reconnect people with the natural world, right in their own backyard.

For the garden beds, we incorporated sturdy macrocarpa sleeper edging, which not only provides a strong, structured finish but also enhances the formal, clean lines of the space. To maintain a sense of formality, we chose Ficus tuffi for hedging, which was expertly pleached to create a tidy, structured appearance. Beneath these elegant hedges, we planted a combination of English box, white roses, and gardenias. The white roses offer a crisp, classic look while the gardenias provide a beautiful scent throughout the summer months, adding both visual and sensory appeal.
The end result is a refined, sophisticated garden that is both practical and elegant. The client was thrilled with the outcome — a simple, yet striking garden that will only grow more private and formal as the plants mature over time.

The existing outdoor shower was located next to unsightly AC units, and the backdrop left much to be desired. To enhance this area, we designed a striking Vitex batten screen that extended along the house, providing both a functional and aesthetic backdrop for the shower. This feature wrapped around the AC units, turning an otherwise unappealing area into a vibrant, stylish focal point. The rich color and clean lines of the screen created a stunning contrast against the surrounding materials.
With the hard surfaces dominating much of the design, we wanted to soften the space with a bit of planting. We chose Lomandra Lime Tuff for a small bed at the rear of the garden. This hardy, low-maintenance plant added texture and greenery without overwhelming the design, providing just the right balance between form and function.
To further enhance the atmosphere, we added uplighting to highlight the back wall in the evenings, bringing the space to life at night. The final result is a sleek, functional garden that meets the client’s needs while incorporating unique design elements that elevate the overall aesthetic.
The client was thrilled with the outcome, and the garden now provides a relaxing, low-maintenance retreat where they can unwind in the spa after a long day.

To accommodate the client’s young children and ensure a low-maintenance space, we incorporated artificial grass into the garden design. This provided a clean, mud-free area that could be enjoyed year-round, making it a practical solution for busy family life.
A raised planter was installed around the garden’s boundary, with Ficus tuffi hedging planted and carefully pleached to create a formal yet lush green perimeter. Underneath, we planted a selection of native grasses and low-maintenance plants, achieving a simple yet elegant finish that complemented the overall design.
The front of the house featured a striking chessboard pathway, which led visitors toward the entrance, alongside a clean, artificial lawn. This feature allowed the client, who leads a busy professional life, to enjoy a low-maintenance front garden that requires little upkeep on the weekends.
The client was extremely satisfied with the level of craftsmanship in every area we worked on, and the success of this project has led to us being engaged for additional projects for them and their family.

For the spa area itself, we chose to install a natural stone patio that serves as a beautiful and functional base, providing a serene space for the client to relax while overlooking the expansive, lush lawns that stretch across the property. To ensure the area retained a sense of privacy, we strategically planted larger, more substantial plants around the perimeter, effectively screening the space from the house. This thoughtful arrangement allowed for glimpses of the surrounding garden, creating an inviting, secluded retreat.
Since the installation, the client has been enjoying the space daily and has expressed how transformative it has been to have such a peaceful, private area to relax in. In their words, they can’t understand why they didn’t do it sooner.

One of the key challenges was integrating the existing pool into the overall design. Its location wasn’t ideal, so we had to be strategic with how we built around it. Through the creative use of decking, retaining walls, stairs, structured lawn areas, and expansive garden beds, we were able to not only work with the existing layout but turn it into a strong feature of the space.
The result is a beautiful, functional garden that blends the relaxed luxury of a resort with the grounding beauty of native New Zealand flora. The planting palette reflects this perfectly — offering lush, layered beds with a sense of place and connection to the land.
More than two years on, the client continues to enjoy the garden and couldn’t be happier with the results. It has become a place where the family spends more time together outdoors, deepening their connection to both nature and each other — exactly what we hope every garden can offer.
